U.S. Cellular Delays LTE Rollout

U.S. Cellular said Friday that its LTE network will be up and running devices which support it are ready during the first quarter of 2012, a delay from previous statements.
The nation's sixth-largest carrier, which recently recorded another Reader's Choice award from PCMag.com, said that its LTE transition would be enabled by King Street Wireless, in which U.S. Cellular has a stake.
That's the same message U.S. Cellular delivered in May, when it said that it would make available LTE devices and its network by the holidays. At the time, the company claimed that the LTE network would service 25 percent of its customer base.
Details of additional markets will be revealed later, the company said. The company's coverage covers most of the United States, via EVDO.
"With a 4G LTE network and cutting-edge 4G LTE devices, customers will be able to connect to their friends and family even faster and get more done when they're away from their home or office," said Mary N. Dillon, president and CEO of U.S. Cellular, in a statement. "We're excited to partner with King Street Wireless to bring 4G LTE speed to more customers next year that will help them be more productive. Our commitment to providing products and services that simplify and enhance customers' lives is one of the reasons we have the happiest customers in wireless."
Dillon made news this week when she said that U.S. Cellular had turned down the Apple iPhone 4S. Dillon said Apple's "terms were unacceptable from a risk and profitability standpoint" and claimed network capacity was not a factor in her decision. The company, however, is open to carrying the iPhone in the future, she said.
